Women’s Rugby – Opportunities for all
April 17, 2015 was a historic day for rugby league in Spain as it was the date on which the first women’s rugby league match was held, between the Madrid Custodians and Getafe. After that game, there were other matches and competing teams, such as Córdoba Fénix and Torrent Tigres, as well as friendlies against French teams like Mareseille Rugby League. It was during this period that the administration of the time did not know how to advance this side of rugby league properly and the women’s game slowly faded.
That is something that the current president of España Rugby League, Dean Buchan, is willing to solve as part of the commitment by the AERL with it’s program of opportunities for all. “Women and girls should have the same opportunities to play rugby than any man and boy, and that was one of the first things that I started to focus when I took over as president last year ”.
