AERL LAUNCH WOMEN’S NATIONAL TEAM

The AERL have today marked International Women’s Day by announcing a national women’s team.
The new side will be open age and will play their first fixture in October as part of a double header that will see Spain play Wales in the Euro A group stage in Valencia.
The creation of the women’s team is part of Spain Rugby League’s commitment to grow the game and offer more opportunities for females to play Rugby League and it’s committed to attracting more women to the game.
Dean Buchan Head of AERL said: “We are totally committed to supporting the growth of Rugby League amongst women and girls. A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes and although we already had a men’s team and a wheelchair team something just felt lacking. We can now say that we are a fully inclusive sport and we hope to work with domestic clubs over the next year to further expand the women’s game.”
The announcement of the new team also coincided with the AERL announcing a vacancy for the role of women and girl’s development officer. The role will be to head up the Spanish Women’s team as programme co-ordinator.
Shortly, the AERL will be announcing a number of taster sessions and try outs which will cater for all women interested in either having a taster of Rugby League or aiming to excel further within the sport.
